10 questions to help identify a pastor within your congregation

Every congregation hopes for faithful, Christ-centered leadership, but what if your next pastor is already worshipping alongside you every week?

Throughout Scripture, God often calls ordinary or unexpected people to ministry. Rather than looking only outside your congregation when the time comes for pastoral leadership, it’s worth asking whether God may already be preparing someone from within your own church family.

The following ten questions can help church leaders recognize individuals who may be called to pastoral ministry and discern whether they would benefit from further formation and training.

1. Does this individual show a deep understanding of Scripture?

A pastor’s foundation is God’s Word. Look for someone who engages Scripture thoughtfully, aims to understand it more deeply and consistently seeks biblical truth in both conversation and daily life.

2. Is this person known for their spiritual maturity and faithfulness?

Pastoral ministry requires more than knowledge—it requires character. Consider whether this individual demonstrates humility, integrity, consistency and a spiritual maturity that others naturally recognize.

3. Have they shown a passion for shepherding others?

Pastors care for people long before they receive the title. Notice those who naturally encourage others, offer support during difficult seasons, listen well and invest in the spiritual lives of those around them.

4. Do they possess strong communication skills?

Sharing the Gospel takes many forms, from preaching and teaching to one-on-one conversations. While communication skills can certainly be developed, it’s helpful to identify those who speak with clarity, compassion and confidence.

5. Are they recognized by others for their leadership potential?

Often, others notice leadership before an individual recognizes it themselves. Pay attention to those whom people naturally look to for wisdom and guidance.

6. Have they expressed a desire or calling to pastoral ministry?

Many future pastors describe a growing sense that God may be leading them toward ministry. Whether they’ve openly shared that calling or simply begun asking questions about ministry, those conversations can be an important starting point for discernment.

7. Do they have the support of fellow church leaders?

Calling is best discerned in community. When pastors, elders and other respected leaders affirm an individual’s gifts and character, it provides valuable confirmation as they explore the possibility of ministry.

8. Are they willing to undergo training for pastoral leadership?

A willingness to learn is one of the clearest indicators of someone who is ready to grow. Healthy pastoral formation combines theological education with practical ministry experience, equipping future pastors to faithfully serve the Church.

9. How do they handle conflict within the congregation?

Every congregation experiences disagreement from time to time. Look for individuals who respond with wisdom, patience, grace and a desire for understanding rather than division.

10. Does their life reflect the qualities of a pastor?

Pastoral ministry goes beyond preparing sermons and leading Bible studies. Consider whether this person’s life consistently reflects Christ-like character, servant leadership and a genuine care for God’s people.

Investing in the leaders God is already raising up

Identifying future pastors isn’t about finding someone who’s already prepared. It’s about recognizing the gifts God has placed within your congregation and providing the encouragement, formation and training needed to help them flourish.

At Luther House of Study, we’re committed to equipping people for faithful pastoral ministry through accessible theological education. If someone in your congregation comes to mind as you read through these questions, we’d love to help you explore what the next step could look like.
